Rediscover the Gentle Joy in Motion
The Feldenkrais Method blends motor development, psychology, biomechanics, and martial arts. The lessons directly engage our natural intelligence in a gentle and joyful way, involving attention, perception, imagination and cognition. The hundreds of Feldenkrais lesson variations address every joint and muscle group in the body.
The Feldenkrais Method is based on the belief that we develop habitual
patterns of movement and thought (physical and psychological behaviors),
which we have adapted for our personal biological and social comfort. These
patterns become deeply embedded in our neurological systems, and can become
"blocks" to new ways of thinking, feeling, and moving. By exploring
new ways of moving and sensing, the Method helps us free ourselves from
those habitual patterns, allowing new patterns of movement, thought, and
feeling to emerge.
The Method is targeted for people who wish to perform at their peak, such
as performing artists, writers, and athletes. It is also suited for people
who wish to move more easily, those living with chronic pain, and individuals
with restricted mobility.
The Origins of The Feldenkrais Method
The Feldenkrais Method is named for Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904 - 1984), a distinguished European scientist, physicist, and engineer and martial artist. He developed the Method out of his exploration of the relationship between movement and consciousness, contributing to the new field of somatic education. The principles he pioneered continue to influence the disciplines of education, the arts, gerontology, physical medicine and psychology.
A fascinating biography of Dr. Feldenkrais can be read at the International Feldenkrais Federation website.
